Why Weddings Are Secretly the Best Thing for Singles (and Couples)

Everyone treats weddings like a finish line. Two people cross it, everyone claps, cake happens. But if you ask me (and as a Philadelphia matchmaker, you kind of are), a wedding isn’t a finish line. It’s a starting gun for everyone else in the room.

A Wedding Is a Room Full of People Who Believe in Love

Think about the guest list at any wedding. It’s not a random crowd. It’s a hand-picked group of people who love the couple enough to clear their whole Saturday and buy a gift off a registry. That’s rare air. You will not find a room this warm, this open, this primed for connection anywhere else, not at a bar, not on a dating app, not at a networking mixer with name tags and bad coffee.

If you’re single, a wedding is basically a matchmaking event with better lighting and an open bar. Talk to the groomsman. Dance with the cousin from out of town. Say yes to the seat next to the stranger at your table. Love is loud at weddings, and it is contagious.

If you’re newly dating someone, bring them. Let them meet your people inside a room that’s already glowing. Nothing tells you more about a new relationship than watching how someone slow dances at a stranger’s wedding.

Here’s My Secret: I Have a Side Gig

Here’s something most people don’t know about me. Matchmaking is my career, but on weekends, I officiate weddings.

I never went looking for this. Friends just started asking me to marry them, one after another, like the universe decided I needed a second job standing at the altar. I said yes because I couldn’t say no to something that beautiful, and it turned into one of the greatest honors of my life.

There’s nothing like standing up front, watching two people who found each other against all odds, holding the exact kind of love I spend my career trying to create for other people. Officiating didn’t find me by accident. It’s the same work as matchmaking, just wearing a different outfit.

My Husband and I Call It Date Night

Here’s the part that always makes people laugh. My husband comes with me to almost every wedding I officiate, and we treat it as our date night. Good music, good food, an excuse to dress up, and a front row seat to love in its purest form. If you want a date night idea that never gets old, marry two people together and slow dance afterward.

The Takeaway

Weddings aren’t just celebrations. They’re some of the most powerful connection events on the calendar, whether you’re single and looking, newly dating, or married twenty years and just looking for a good excuse to dance with your spouse. As a matchmaker and now an officiant, I get to see love from both ends, the beginning and the “I do,” and I promise you, it’s the same magic every time.

So next time you get that wedding invite, don’t treat it like an obligation. Treat it like an opportunity. Love is in the air. Go make the most of it.
