How to Make the Most of Our Dating Events

Why dating events work

A dating event is one of the few places where everyone in the room is single, open, and hoping to meet someone. Nobody has to wonder if you’re allowed to say hello. It’s a garden party where every guest came to plant something.

But like any garden, what you get out of it depends on how you show up. Here’s how I coach my clients to make the most of every event.

1. SET A POSITIVE MINDSET

Go in with an open mind and a good attitude. Don’t walk in with a checklist or a rigid picture of who “the one” will look like. Aim to enjoy yourself and meet new people. If you treat the night like a job interview, it will feel like one. If you treat it like an adventure, you’ll be much more fun to talk to.

2. TRY TO ARRIVE ON TIME

Showing up on time, or a few minutes early, is a secret weapon. The room is still quiet, which makes starting a conversation so much easier. You’ll also meet other early birds who are just as eager to chat. Walking into a packed room halfway through the night is like jumping onto a moving train. Get on at the first stop.

3. USE OPEN BODY LANGUAGE

Smile, make eye contact, and keep your arms uncrossed. Your body speaks before you do. Open body language is a welcome mat that says “come say hi.” Crossed arms and a phone to stare at say the opposite.

4. INITIATE CONVERSATIONS

Don’t wait for people to come to you. Everyone here is single and there to connect! Approach someone standing alone, or join a small group. A simple “Hi, I’m (your name)” works wonders. Someone has to go first, and it might as well be you.

5. MOVE AROUND

Even if you hit it off with someone right away, don’t spend the whole night in one spot. Aim to meet several people. Politely excuse yourself to grab a drink or check out another part of the venue. Think of it as sampling the menu before you order. You might discover something you didn’t know you wanted.

6. CONNECTING FOR MORE

If you’re hitting it off, feel free to ask for their number. And only give yours out if you’re truly interested in getting to know them better. Being honest about your interest is kind to everyone.

7. KEEP IT CLASSY

Be kind, present, and gracious, and remember that you’re representing yourself and the community. Wear something that makes you feel confident, and let your personality do the accessorizing. Enjoy a drink if you like, but you never need one to have a good time. Sparkling water counts. And keep the talk about past dates and exes off the table. That’s not sexy.

8. ENJOY, DATING IS FUN!

Think of dating events as a pleasant social experiment. There is no such thing as a wasted night, because every conversation is a chance to practice, grow, and get curious. Bring a sense of wonder, and let the evening surprise you.
